In June, 2016 I applied to compete in the 2016, North American Body Art Championships. It was worth the shot I thought, after all I've been painting bodies for about six years and I absolutely love it. I actually assisted an emerging artist in the Atlanta competition in 2015 but was really on the fence about ever competing myself. After some serious thought and a little encouragement form several close friends and family I decided to apply. Imagine my excitement when I received an email from Co-founder and Director, Madelyn Greco notifying me of my acceptance. Most people compete to win, after all it is a competition and there is a cash prize and a cool title involved. What full time artist can't use a little extra cash? While a win would be a magnificent bonus, I am really going for other reasons.
I was placed in the professional category for this competition although I applied as an emerging artist. When I saw this in my notification I was confused and immediately very nervous. I know some of the people in the pro category personally so I know what I am up against and it's pretty intense. Artists like my friend Ren Allen, Oscar Galvan Jr., & Alex Hansen are only a few among those who I will be competing with. Many of the artists that have been a part of this competition have gone on to bigger competitions such as the World Body Painting Festival in Austria and the TV show, Skin Wars.
The experience is a very important aspect for me. Doing something that absolutely terrifies me is exhilarating in a way because I know it will enable me to grow both personally and professionally. I am really nervous, excited and honored all at once for the opportunity and can't wait to see what the competition brings out. The most important of all is to go, bring my "A" game, and have a blast! Of course my brother, Brian will be traveling with me as my model because he is so phenomenal at it. He has been one of my number one supporters throughout my art career and I definitely want him by my side for this experience.
