In my years as an emerging artist, I have created many pieces of work, all personal, and all created with a meaning and story behind it. Although all of my work is very personal and meaningful to me, the latest piece I am currently painting the final phases on has to be one of the most special. The process of creating "Queendom" which is what I have been inspired to name her, has been an inspiring process.I was staring at an image of Africa on the map one day while doing some research when I noticed that if mirrored, the continent looked like butterfly wings. The image of a woman wearing those wings immediately entered my mind and I knew I had to create it. She was a dancer, one that ...

Inspiration Equals Perspiration

Where does inspiration come from and how does it transform into action? As an artist, inspiration comes in many forms; from my children, to nature, other artists, life's journeys, love and loss. Inspiration causes a chain reaction that often turns into creative thoughts and images and eventually original pieces of art. Many of my creative thoughts and visions come to me in the shower, while I'm driving, or in dreams. These are not exactly places that I can document or sketch the ideas but I definitely try to hold onto the best ones as long as I can. "I am an artsist, and unapologetic for my creations." This quote is one that I live by, because it explains much of my thought process as an artist. The world we live in has too many boxes people wrap their lives up in, and they cannot seem to see let alone move beyond that box. This box seems to be a comfort zone, has no room for growth and has so many limits, that boundaries become the most often used word.  As many artist will tell you the creative process doesn't have limits unless you set them, and I'll be damned if I set myself up in that crowded box again! Being unapologetic means to be unwilling to make or express an apology. In my life there have been moments where I felt ...

A few years ago I met a woman by the name of Joy Monroe via Facebook. Her sister Shawnee told her about me and she sent me a message to tell me she was inspired by my work; I am so inspired by her now too. Like me, she is an artist and a phenomenal one. We've chatted here and there over the last few years but it wasn't until 2015 that we really connected. I traveled to Atlanta in October, 2015 to attend Living Art America body art competition because competition is something that I've been entertaining for the last couple of years. Joy also planned to attend and encouraged me to sign up to be an assistant. I did end up assisting in the competition which you could read ...

Mariposa means butterfly in spanish. I'm not Spanish but I happen to love butterflies. From thier beautiful wings to the naturally inspiring life cycle they share so publically, I am obsessed! The obsession began in December of 1997 when my daughter was born and Mariah Carey's song "Butterfly" was released. The song was about a tranformational love that forever changed the life of the singer which was exactly how I felt about the love I felt for my child.During my pregnancy I realized that I was part of a miracle. The gift of carrying life is not something that everyone gets to experience. Even as a young mom to be I knew that I was officially responsible for the growth of another human ...
